December 18, 1940 - December 29, 2022
Jean Ann Whitaker was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on December 18th, 1940, to parents Julia Isaac and Clifford Marcial. Jean was blessed with many loving siblings, Vena, Ira, Enid, Sonny, Hugh, Irwin, Kelvin, Vernon, Stanley, and Desmond. She grew up in Caranage, where her unforgettable childhood memories were made and where she met and married Clevus James.
They eventually settled in Somerset, New Jersey, where they raised four children (Janice, Denise, Kathryn, and Curtis "Q"). She is always willing to learn and educate herself. Jean earned various certificates and degrees, but in the end, nursing captured her heart. She studied nursing at the County College of Morris. Jean spent the majority of her career as a private duty nurse, where she excelled at developing intimate and caring relationships with her patients.
She retired from this career and was happy to spend time traveling, playing with grandchildren, and trying to take over Zumba classes. Jean also loved to sing with the "Silver Serenaders," who held a special place in her heart. At the drop of a dime, she would belt out a religious hymn to show her love of the Lord. She was known to play piano and sing for her fellow residents in her senior building.
Jean was a dedicated prayer warrior, a servant of the Lord, and an active church member. She was very charismatic and was always surrounded by friends. She made lifelong connections and would go out of her way to call and check on all of her buddies and surrogate children.
In the end, Jean was extremely fortunate to have children and angels sent by the Lord to watch out for her; she was predeceased by her daughter Kathryn, who moved heaven and earth to keep her mom comfortable. Then her eldest daughter, Denise, along with Denise's children (Jean's grandchildren), took over as the primary caretaker for Jean. In her final days, an angel named Alanna came to keep her comfortable, joyful, and happy.
Jean is survived by:
Janice and her children, Vanessa and Brittany.
Denise and her children, Claryce, Stephen, Andrew, Joseph, and Julia.
Kathryn's children, Tanisha and Abishai.
Curtis "Q" and his child, Indigo.
